Darjeeling is a town in India's West Bengal state, in the Himalayan foothills. Once a summer resort for the British Raj elite, it remains the terminus of the narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, or “Toy Train,” completed in 1881. It's famed for the distinctive black tea grown on plantations that dot its surrounding slopes. Its backdrop is Mt. Kanchenjunga, among the world’s highest peaks.

Darjeeling is well known for quite a few items, mainly their large selection of tea and woollen items such as shawls, scarves, hats and jackets. Darjeeling also offers a lot of handicrafts and exotic Tibetan items that are great souvenirs to take back home.

While summer months from April to June are the ideal time to travel to Darjeeling, some travellers including couples also prefer to visit the beautiful town during winter months from October to December.

Darjeeling is quite safe in all seasons. But don't push the limits like doing late nights or wandering around in secluded areas. No place on earth would then be safe. Otherwise you should be fine.

LANGUAGE

Nepali, Hindi, Bengali and English are the prevailing languages of Darjeeling. Nepali (which is spoken by more than 70% of the population in Darjeeling, Kurseong and Mirik subdivisions) is the dominant language in the hills..

CLOTHES

You should carry light woolens for the evenings, like a light full sweater, shawl or a jacket. Otherwise normal dress wear is okay like jeans, T-Shirts etc. But do take a pair of shoes or sneakers with socks because it would be required if you plan to go out in the evenings.

CULTURE

The culture of Darjeeling, India, is quite diverse and unique. The two predominant religions are Hinduism and Vajrayana Buddhism. Dashain, Tihar, Buddha Jayanti, Christmas, Holi, Ram Navami, etc. are the main festivals.
